There is a special scale on the upper 1″ increment side of the ruler where the scale is 1″ = 0.5″. This provides:
- symmetry of the board by ensuring the left and right measurement where the rail intersects on the ruler can be checked; if it’s symmetrical then it will have the same measurement on either side
- easy measurement of the width of the board by looking at either rail measurement
